• One more for the road. Touted LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson told reporters he's geeked for "round three" against Alabama receiver Julio Jones on Saturday, almost certainly the last head-to-head showdown between the Class of 2008 stars before they take their act to the first round of the NFL Draft next spring. It's also the last chance Peterson will have for a leg up after Jones delivered the best game of his freshman season (128 yards) against LSU in 2008 and the best game of his sophomore season (102 yards) against the Tigers last year, including that 73-yard catch-and-run for the go-ahead touchdown with Peterson cramping on the sidelines in the fourth quarter. After his return, Peterson was manned up on Jones a few minutes later when he stepped in front of a Greg McElroy pass for his infamous non-interception in front of the LSU bench, on the drive that led to an icing 'Bama field goal.
Alas, Les Miles said LSU would take a "mix and match" approach to covering Jones, employing multiple corners over the course of the game. [Birmingham News]
• Stick your pins in that voodoo doll. Yet another meteor struck Michigan's hard-luck secondary Wednesday with word that starting cornerback J.T. Floyd will miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Floyd follows preseason casualty Troy Woolfolk onto the disabled list, making him the sixth starter or would-be starter at cornerback to leave the lineup for one reason or another since the end of last year. In related news, the Wolverines rank 117th nationally against the pass, are dead last in the Big Ten in total defense and have allowed at least 34 points in all four Big Ten games to date. [Detroit Free Press]
• Lawyers know best. USC has taken down a hydraulic lift it uses to film practices, a direct response to the fatal accident involving a Notre Dame student on a similar lift last week. The filming will be moved to the roof of baseball offices adjacent to the Trojans' practice field. [L.A. Daily News]
• More hurtin' 'Canes. Miami, already resigned to starting a true freshman quarterback against Maryland in place of concussed Jacory Harris, will also have to reach down the depth chart at running back, where leading rusher Damien Berry is out with an undisclosed injury. Berry had pounded out four straight 100-yard games (not including 94 and 87-yard efforts against Ohio State and Pitt, respectively) before last week's loss to Virginia and currently has more yards on the ground than the rest of the team combined. [Miami Herald]
• I'm still here. Former Notre Dame quarterback/Cincinnati linebacker Demetrius Jones, now a Division II tight end in Wilberforce, Ohio, said he now regrets leaving South Bend in haste after he was benched for hotshot freshman Jimmy Clausen in 2007. Jones told the Chicago Tribune he's in the process of converting his college diary into a book, tentatively titled "How Notre Dame Changed My Life," and still hopes to play in the NFL. [Chicago Tribune]
Quickly... A Seattle company is testing high-tech mouthpieces designed to communicate data about the force of collisions to the sideline. ... USC's middle linebacker position is up for grabs again. ... A call for "negative campaigning" by coaches against poll rivals. Has he ever heard of recruiting? ... Greg McElroy has advanced to the district interview stage of his quest for a Rhodes Scholarship. ... Former Notre Dame quarterback and Cincinnati linebacker Demetrius Jones, now a Division II tight end, said he's working on a book called "How Notre Dame Changed My Life." ... And a Washington fan has once again lit up a bridge in Portland, Ore., with purple and gold lights ahead of the Huskies' visit to Oregon.
