Puck Daddy taste test: Official New York Islanders cupcakes

(Yes, those Puck Daddy banners were edible.)

One of our favorite stories from over the summer that later turned into a daylong Twitter trending topic was the subject of the New York Islanders announcing an official cupcake partner with Cupcake Gourmet in Huntington, N.Y.

On Tuesday night, we followed up with owner Amy Brady at Nassau Coliseum and she gave us our own box of cupcakes for a taste test of some of her more popular varieties (tough gig, I know).

Since putting a cart in the concourse at the Coliseum, Brady said that business has been going so well, she's added a second one inside the arena. On top of that, Cupcake Gourmet officially announced a partnership with the Long Island Ducks, an independent minor league baseball team.

Aside from doing sponsored giveaways during Islander games, Brady said she's hoping to get a few players involved to help market specific cupcakes.

So, taking a break from scouring the web for the latest updates on Hamburger Women, KHL brawls and wacky minor league hockey jerseys, we picked out five and decided to see just how good an official Islanders cupcake was.

Double Trouble

First up, the Double Trouble is for chocolate lovers. Have you ever had one of those molten lava chocolate cakes at your local Applebees or Friday's? This is it, in cupcake form. The chocolate fudge on top is met with even more on the inside combining for an incredibly rich, yet delicious cupcake.

NHL Cupcake equivalent: The Matt Cooke. Looks innocent, until the chocolate blindsides you.

Apple Pie

It's like a Thanksgiving Day dessert you'd see in "Honey I Shrunk the Kids." It looks like a complicated treat to make, but it tasted simply like a regular apple pie you'd have after a holiday dinner.

NHL Cupcake equivalent: The Alexei Kovalev. A seasonal one. Real good for a short time. Also: Flakey.

Red Velvet

If you're a fan of red velvet cake, the cupcake is no different. Smooth, creamy and delicious. It'll make you grab another, or order up a full slice of red velvet cake.

NHL Cupcake equivalent: The Steven Stamkos. Everyone's new favorite.

Cookies 'N Cream

We would have loved a larger cookie piece on top, but the cake part mixed with the cream icing really brings the flavor.

NHL Cupcake equivalent: The Nick Lidstrom. The old standard. Consistent and reliable.

Peanut Butter Chocolate

Finally, a Reese's Pieces on top with a creamy frosty will truly make the peanut butter fans happy. Despite this being the fifth cupcake tested in a 10-minute span and the sugar overload was settling in, there really isn't anything better than the mixing of chocolate and peanut butter.

NHL Cupcake equivalent: The Ryan Kesler. Solid all-around choice combining everything you like.
