Notre Dame student suffers fatal fall from practice field tower

It was the worst possible scenario this afternoon at Notre Dame, where a routine Wednesday workout in preparation for Saturday's visit from Tulsa was interrupted by a team videographer's fatal fall from above the practice field. From the Chicago Tribune:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A 20-year-old Notre Dame student died Wednesday when a video tower overlooking the football team's practice collapsed in high winds and fell into an adjacent street.

The school announced the death in a news release but did not identify the male student.
[...]
The student was filming football practice from a hydraulic scissor lift when the incident occurred. The student was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he later died, the school said.

Winds were reportedly gusting above 50 miles per hour when the tower went down. Similar conditions had led coach Brian Kelly to move Tuesday's practice to the Irish's indoor facility for the first time all season, but seemingly more pleasant skies brought the team back outside for today's session.

The student's name has been released. An investigation is pending; no word on how the fall might affect Irish practices for the remainder of the week. The victim is the second depressingly young man associated with Notre Dame football to suffer fatal injuries in a fall this year, after touted offensive line signee Matt James went over the railing of a hotel balcony in April. Condolences to his family and friends and the university.
